STD Clinical Update Webinar – Congenital Syphilis Update for CA Pediatric Providers

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) continues to see dramatic statewide increases in cases of congenital syphilis (CS), a severe yet preventable condition when syphilis is passed from mother to fetus.

This webinar, presented by the California Prevention Training Center, features Dr. Kelly Johnson, infectious disease physician from UCSF and Dr. Nael Mhaissen, pediatric infectious diseases specialist from Valley Children’s Hospital.

They will discuss CS epidemiology, clinical presentation, and neonatal management. Finally, they will discuss ways providers can help stem the rising tide of CS.

Drs. Mhaissen and Johnson cover the following learning objectives for this webinar:

  1. Describe California’s CS epidemiology
  2. Recognize the clinical manifestations of CS
  3. Discuss CS diagnosis, evaluation, and management

Disseminated Gonococcal Infection in CA—Dear Colleague letter from CDPH

December 23, 2020: CDPH requests medical providers should reinstate routine screening recommendations for STDs in females <25 years of age, pregnant females, men who have sex with men and individuals with HIV. Providers should increase their clinical suspicion for DGI in patients with joint pain and undertake the following additional actions.

Clinical Program Faculty

Dr. Sharon Adler, MPH, is clinical faculty at the California Prevention Training Center and is Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in the department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Adler has worked in the STD field for 20 years including 10 years of work at the California Department of Public Health STD Control Branch. She is board-certified in Preventive Medicine/Public Health and has clinical experience working in community health and public health clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as at the San Francisco STD City Clinic. In her current position, Dr. Adler develops curricula, conducts and coordinates STD trainings.
