Understanding image file formats
Raster Images
Raster images (png, jpg, tif, gif) are measured in pixel density. High quality printing is done at 300 pixels per inch, while web images are commonly 72 pixels per inch. Remember, you can always reduce the size of a raster image, but you cannot enlarge it without hurting its clarity. Generally, raster images inserted into Word documents are more predictable and clear.
Vector Images
Vector images (EPS, AI, EMF) are not pixelated, but are defined by their shape outlines. They have the advantage of being sharp at any enlargement size. The EMF format is designed to be used in Microsoft programs while AI/EPS formats work with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
TIP: Printers of specialty items often ask for vector format pdfs.
